With the world heading for 3 – 4 degrees or more of global warming by the end of this century, yesterday at dawn I joined a committed group of climate activists who staged an Extinction Rebellion protest by erecting a banner in front of the famous Wanaka Tree and handing out fliers about the climate emergency.
There was a large group of tourists and photographers – including a bride and groom – some of whom joined the protest by posing with our signs calling for worldwide urgent government action to reverse climate change.
Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that began in UK with many passive civil disobedience protests. This past week there have been 1000 arrests and significant media coverage for three demands:
1. Governments must tell the truth about the climate crisis, its urgency and the extent of the already un-avoidable damages.
2. We must reach Carbon zero by 2025 and start to drawdown Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere
3. We must establish a participative democracy to stop vested interests and corporations from interfering with the democratic process.
